Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony while he was almost completely deaf. Cai Glover, who is hard of hearing, chooses to dance without his hearing aid. What do our senses, or their absence, reveal about our world and, more importantly, how do they guide us beyond our differences?

To perceive, to feel, to understand. Together, Hélène Blackburn and Cai Glover revisit this breathtaking epic in order to embrace the full grandeur of one of the greatest masterpieces in the classical repertoire: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In this new interpretation, where discipline continues to shape beauty, sight and hearing step aside, making room for the pure magic of dance. The highly physical choreography explores the emotions we project onto inanimate objects and the ways these objects can fill the gaps that our disabilities, whatever their scale, create between us and reality.

Blackburn brilliantly passes the work on to Glover, who remains one of its outstanding performers while also becoming co-artistic director and steward of future revivals, bringing his own perspective to the choreographer’s revolutionary ideas. Beethoven’s reimagined music is woven into a demanding contemporary movement vocabulary, unfolding within a set where light continually plays tricks on our perception.

A bold sensory journey, 9.2 speaks to all generations, embraces every body and every individual, and transforms them into a shared language.
